Majora's Mask
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask is one of my all time favorite video game! I love the Zelda series, but my heart was absolutely won over by Majora's Mask's oppressive atmosphere and universal weirdness. It, alongside Ocarina of Time are a huge part of my childhood!
I've always wanted to own the mask, to be honest. I've thought about making it multiple times over the years, especially with my crafting skills developping and seeing a lot of very nice Skull Kid cosplays online (I even considered cosplaying him before doing Young Link!), but I always shied away from it because, well. It's a hard prop to make. I was trying to manage my amount of projects in 2025 to have more time to touch grass focus on other aspects of my life, so while I was putting costumes a little on the backburner, I still yearned for short projects to keep my hands busy.
I figured I could finally splurge on a 3D print blank of the mask and finish it and paint it myself! I'd only ever worked with another large PLA 3D Print item before (Holon's skull face), so it was new-ish territory still. I ordered a 3D print of the mask on Etsy... and it came in completely mangled and broken in multiple places (I'd rather not reccommend them; the package's lack of padding was absolutely to blame.) Thankfully, with a lot of work, priming and sanding and filling in and gluing, I managed to just about salvage it and create a super smooth surface! I also added some sintra pieces to plug up the holes that made this version wearable, since I wanted it to just be a display piece, and added hardware to hang it off of the wall. I then hand painted the whole thing with acrylics and sealed it up!
3D Prints aren't my favorite thing to work with (very brittle for my taste), but I don't think I could've gotten such a great result if I had started from scratch with another method. It looks positively ghastly on my office wall now and I can appreciate it whenever I glance over to the calendar.
