After making Madoka, I wanted to make a costume from one of my favorite games of all time, Mother 3. I discovered it when Lucas' segment in Subspace Emissary in Super Smash Bros Brawl scared the living hell out of me for a week and I ventured to the web to find out where the big scary statue that chased him came from. Kumatora is one of my favorite characters ever; back then, I really saw myself in the brash, tomboyish princess of Osohe Castle. (I also thought her design was cool as hell and wanted to dye my hair bright pink. I never dyed my hair.)

In contrast to Madoka, Kumatora was the first cosplay I made completely by myself, with no crafting or tool help. I bought a wig online from Arda Wigs, made her jewelry out of old chains and bits I had lying around and Fimo Clay for the gems, found cute (if uncomfortable) bright pink rain boots and then sewed up her dress. I used a commercial pattern that I followed to the letter, except to add bias tape to the sleeves, bottom, and pockets, and adding the hood.

I wore it a few times, though I quickly outgrew it; unfortunately, I made the dress out of cotton broadcloth, and soon enough I didn't really fit in it anymore. It's ok though; I was learning to make things all by myself, and those mistakes helped me grow as an artist. My only regret with this costume, in the end, is having little to no photos of it! Most photos I had of myself in costume were found by either digging the web, or passing my digital camera to someone in the crowd during a group photoshoot, or taking a mirror selfie. (God, do I miss digging online for photos post-convention... Now people post them all on platforms that make it impossible to download them, if they post photos at all.)

I've kept the wig and pendant preciously in storage since then. Maybe someday, I'll remake her dress out of a nice, stretch cotton... or maybe hoodie material! I still cherish the character deeply, all these years later.
