October Frights for Ghouls and Wights
Sunday, November 2nd 2025
I always get a burst of energy in October. Halloween is my favourite holiday, and there’s always a bunch of costume-friendly events that let me bring out all my best outfits. The temperature gets bearable again for extended walks, it gets dark early enough to go out after work and really absorb the atmosphere. It’s always a treat.
This time around I spent plenty of time watching a bunch of classic horror movies while getting demolished by the common cold. It’s weird to consider the TV as an active activity, but considering it’s phones-off time... It was cozy. The Thing was my favourite watch this month. I also got into The Magnus Protocol (not a movie, but shhh), and I’m very much enjoying the ride so far.
In the highlights of it all, I went to my first Rocky Horror Picture Show Halloween Ball! I’ve watched the movie and gone to small theatre shows, but never the big full official interactive movie screening. Dragging my partner, who had never even seen the movie, into the chaos was wonderful. Sure, the venue charged me 14$ for two water bottles and didn’t let us bring our own, but it’s the price to pay to get to live the experience. I wore Nullref out for the event and her head shielded me from all the toilet paper raining down from the balcony, so I’d say it was a success!
I gave candy out at home for the second time this year! I wore Nullref for that as well and thankfully did not terrify any children too much (I had planned to wear Sonic again to delight them, but it was raining and I didn’t want to damage him; Nullref can handle water relatively well.) We doubled the amount of candy and somehow still ran out within the hour... But it gave us a lot of time to walk around, look at the decorations and costumes, and take a bunch of creepy photos of Nullref. I’m also elated to see the culture shift a little around Halloween. We got a little handful of candy just walking around, being challenged to dance and waving to people. I’m so used to the old mindset of gatekeeping Halloween to a certain age range of kids or needing to have a costume and all those restrictions that it’s nice to see people just... trying to make each other smile, no matter where they come from. (and I’m glad we got chips because yeesh, my stomach isn’t what it used to be with candies!)
I got to go to Otakuthon’s first Halloween edition in more than a decade! I brought my little Tails Doll puppet to the event and wore a cute little coordinated outfit. It was the first convention event in years where I went without a costume; the party had a lot of little matsuri-themed activities and games, so I didn’t want to weight myself down and be unable to participate comfortably. Tails Doll was a popular little guy! People loved seeing him dance and wave, and while I expected as much from the appeal of a puppet alone, I didn’t expect so many people to recognize him! I made him as part of my drive to find more interactive costume ideas for conventions, as I love meeting people and making them laugh, and I was so happy Tails Doll was such a successful project in that regards.
Also, I went to my first con rave ever with him, and it’s kind of amusing the first time I go to one is.. while making a puppet dance its goddamn heart out. He looks so wonderful in motion, I’m so proud of him. I can't host videos on this website currently, so check the video out on my Tumblr blog here! (Warning: Flashing Rave Lights)
Looking back at all I did in one month, getting tattooed, meeting new people, trying out new foods, exploring new parts of the neighbourhood, playing good video games, going to shows and parties and giving out candy on Halloween, I can’t help but get a bit emotional. I’m so thankful to be alive and in a good enough headspace to truly appreciate it.
Things are winding down for now; public transit is on strike so outside of a furry event I already had plans for I’ll probably stay cozy at home and craft for the time being. I did start working on a little analog horror themed OC fursuit... So hopefully it will show up completed on this website before the end of the year. Fingers crossed!
