I came up with Nullref as a Halloween project; The character was designed as a fursuit first and foremost. I love horror and I wanted a character built from the grounds up to represent that. (I already had Holon, but since he started out as a pre-made, people recognize his original maker's craftsmanship! Which is great, but as a cosplayer I love being able to show off my handiwork.) So I sketched some designs based on a few elements I wanted to make (bright circle iris, disheveled hair, and a big snarly jaw) and set out to learn some techniques along the way, like sewing jawsets. Nullref's main inspiration is oldies creepypastas (Smiledog, Sonic.exe, Ben Drowned) early internet emo art, and werewolves. So she's a pile of possessed, malignant data!

She's not a fursona, by any means (I don't think I like having a set avatar representation in general, really) but I do consider her my favorite fursuit original character so far.

Nullref's fursuit has a couple features; notably, her one iris is UV-Reactive and fully poseable (magnets on the inside can be slid around the eye's hole to position it), she has a wide, breathable jaw that can be opened to stick one's face out, her hair is kanekalon wig fiber, and she has airbrushed facial details and EVA foam stitches/staples. She's was built using Kloofsuit's canine head base pattern, with heavy modifications, and features a fleece face. Her paws are made with a custom pattern, lined with two finger escapes (index, middle finger), 3D cuticles and airbrushed shading details. Her tail is... well, it's just basic a dog tail, really, though it has a small strip of 3-inch pile fur on the underside for swishing action.

She was a really fun build and she's very comfortable to wear, with good vision (not a lot of blind spots, but partially obscured by the hair and the iris) and great airflow even without a fan. It was the first time I got to airbrush a project, and it was a great learning experience for that. It was also nice not to breathe in so much fur fibers with the fleece face and practice sculpting the face more thoroughly than I got to with Sonic. I think scary fursuits are super fun to embody! Nullref was so enjoyable to make, she's given me a bunch of ideas for future spooky fursuit designs to test out someday.
